GHSF Daily's Todd Holcomb will be hosting a live blog on ajc.com tonight. If you've got brief accounts or updates of an interesting game, feel welcome to e-mail them to GHSFdaily@bellsouth.net [mailto:ghsfdaily@bellsouth.net] and we'll get them online. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spotlight: Q&A With Franklin Stephens 'I didn't coach for the limelight' One of the more surprising events of the offseason was the decision of Franklin Stephens to leave Class AAAA powerhouse Tucker - where he had won two state championships in his five seasons - for Lamar County, a rural Class AA school in middle Georgia. Stephens says there was no one reason for his decision to head for the country. He expressed gratitude for his opportunity to coach Tucker - he was 64-6 in five seasons - but also conceded what many knew, that he was attracted to a school that had its own stadium in a school system that allowed the athletics program to keep revenue from home games. In DeKalb County, schools give up gate revenue to be redistributed among DeKalb's 19 football-playing high schools. But Stephens said his move was precipitated by what he was getting, not what he was leaving behind. Lamar County, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, opens at Spalding tonight. GHSF Daily caught up with Stephens on Thursday and asked him five questions. Don't you miss the big time? "Tucker is a more high-profile job than Lamar County. We were constantly in the media and on TV a couple of times. We had college coaches coming in. That was exciting. But I really don't need that. I made the decision knowing we were giving up all that. I didn't coach for the limelight. I was able to walk away from it. I'm more happy to have what I have now." What's Lamar County like? "It's similar to Burke County where I grew up, a rural area. And I do like that it's a slower environment now for my kids. I'm only two minutes away from my son's school, three minutes from my daughter. We have our own stadium with that community crowd, where you're the only show in town on a Friday night." What do you like about the football program? "The administration is great. I'm very familiar with the principal [Derick Austin, his former Georgia Southern football teammate]. I knew he was a big supporter of athletics. I knew the community was. I also like that you can get control of the middle school here. There, the kids in middle school might not come to Tucker, whereas I'm pretty sure they're coming to Lamar County High School in Lamar County. I can have relationships with the kids not just in middle school, but elementary school." How does the team look? "When change happens, it can go in different ways. They'd had some success. Coach [Jason] Strickland had put some things in order [12-1 finish in 2011], and they had a great season last year. There were hurt feelings when he left [for the Fitzgerald job]. In the minds of teenagers, they think, 'Why do we have to change?' When I got here, there was a lot of change. The intensity level went higher. They're not used to that. We're still chipping away, trying to get them to believe in what we're doing." What do you miss about Tucker? "I miss the people. We had surrogate grandparents to our kids. I miss pregame meals from Matthews Cafe. I loved their fried chicken. One thing that almost kept me there was the relationship we had with our church, New Mercies. Any time you can find a great church that you're excited about, that's hard to leave. We made great friends." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List Fast starters Franklin Stephens' five-year record at Tucker was 64-6. How does that compare with the first five years at a school for other coaches? We found 18 who lost or tied fewer than 10 games over their first five seasons at their new schools. Let us know if we missed any. Only six of the 18 were first-time head coaches. Among those, Stephens has the third-fewest losses. 68-3 - Jess Simpson, Buford (2005-09) 53-4 - Carlton Lewis, West Point (1948-52)* 52-4 - Robert Davis, Warner Robins (1973-77) 62-5 - Jack Johnson, Mitchell-Baker (1988-92) 53-5-2 - Bill Corry, Morgan County (1956-60)* 64-6 - Franklin Stephens, Tucker (2007-11)* 59-6 - Jeff Herron, Camden County (2000-05) 58-6 - C.B. Cornett, Macon County (1990-94) 56-6 - Wayman Creel, Lakeside-Atlanta (1970-74) 53-6 - Mike Hodges, West Rome (1979-83) 63-7 - Rick Tomberlin, Washington County (1992-96) 51-8-1 - Jimmy Dorsey, McEachern (1984-88) 58-9 - Alan Chadwick, Marist (1985-89)* 57-9 - Bob Sphire, North Gwinnett (2006-10) 57-9 - Chad Campbell, Peach County (2007-11)* 55-9 - Milan Turner, ECI (2005-09)* 56-9 - Steve Pennington, Statesboro (2004-08) 43-9 - Norman Faircloth, Fort Valley (1949-53) *Indicates this was his first head coaching job. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trivia Carlton Lewis, mentioned in the Daily List, came to West Point High in Troup County in 1948, straight out of Georgia Tech, where he had been a basketball and baseball star. He won a state title in his first season at West Point, going 13-0. One of his players was Fob James, who became governor of Alabama. West Point closed in 1986. Which Troup County native was West Point's final head coach? Hint: He later would win a state title at a school in Columbus. (Answer Monday) Answer to Thursday's question: Conrad Nix, recently retired from Northside of Warner Robins, is the coach who finished with exactly 300 victories, but not all of them in Georgia. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In The News Harris County to open new stadium tonight Harris County will play its opening game tonight against Houston County on a new field after a tornado in November tore through the campus. The football field, with new artificial turf and a track, came at a cost of $1.2 million and was paid for with insurance and SPLOST money. A cleanup company, ServiceMaster Recovery Management, arrived the morning after the tornado struck, and more than a hundred workers began removing debris. Damage was extensive to various parts of the high school structure, with entire sections of roofing damaged, skylights blown out and metal siding ripped from the gym. Because of the amount of debris that was scattered around campus, the entire football field had to be dug up. To avoid the risk of shards of glass and metal protruding through the field in years to come, the decision was made to provide the same turf used for the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. "I didn't really think we would be able to start football this year, even being back to where we were before, and now you can look at where we are," Craig Dowling, Harris County School District Superintendent, told WTVM-TV [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001FOyWlC27WDbOC_LNG6GXlJBtzw_TSudJ8ViCqNSqcWFoXzhCZt-A90a78FbqPFyJZkJJuvK5Dv28fXMXZRpxR5pnttO2MuVj8i_pNEpYc0a6gQMAIKuLryaDjb1bF_Senl5KmXMzh_YxB3GEBJ3Eo-qCdV5QHbm8WEF8tre8oeIary2ZMhDS81zvVuSyUjWjwZOCgw6H738OXhbocr9XYXCO5_Xgqpo5] in Columbus. Harris County is the second Georgia school to unveil a stadim this season after losing its first to a tornado. Ringgold lost to Dalton 21-19 last week in its new field. NCC could have benefited from loss to Stephenson Stephenson and North Cobb Christian ended up without football games this week after their opponents backed out. Too bad they could not have played each other instead, but a team that went 1-9 in Class A last season is not a fair match for a Class AAAAA team that has averaged more than 20 college signees in recent years. But here's food for thought: North Cobb Christian would have gained more in the new Class A points system by losing to Stephenson 50-0 than by beating Southwest Atlanta Christian 50-0. How is that? Teams get 10 points for every victory, one point for every win by an opponent during the regular season, and two points for every classification higher that an opponent competes. In this case, North Cobb Christian would get 10 points for beating Southwest Atlanta Christian and another point for every SACA victory during the season. That would be 11 points if SACA repeated its 1-9 record of 2011. By losing to Stephenson, NCC would get about 17 points - eight for playing a team four classes higher, and nine for every Stephenson regular-season win. Stephenson was 9-1 in the regular season in 2011. Class A will seed its 16 state-playoff teams in the public and private school divisions based on this point system. That's why Holy Innocents' is in the lead after its victory over Class AAAAA Lakeside (Atlanta) last week. That's 18 points, plus another point for every game Lakeside wins this season. By the way, SACA was unable to play this week reportedly because of a lack of helmets and shoulder pads, which had been sent off for reconditioning. Stephenson's opponent, Pine Forest of Pensacola, Fla., canceled because of Hurricane Isaac. More Top Performances *Heard County sophomore Daranta Dunson rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns in a 43-37 victory over Callaway.
